Overview

Gout is inflammatory arthritis from monosodium urate crystals, often in big toe.

Symptoms

  • Acute monoarthritis
  • Red, hot, swollen joint
  • Tophi (chronic)

Diagnosis

  • Joint aspiration (MSU crystals)
  • Serum uric acid
  • X-ray (punched-out lesions)

Treatments

  • Colchicine
  • NSAIDs
  • Allopurinol (prophylaxis)
  • Diet low in purine
